JAPAN’S EARTHQUAKE 
CAUSES EARTH’S AXIS TO SHIFT
Washington (IANS) - The massive earthquake that shook Japan and triggered a huge tsunami appears to have shifted the Earth on its axis and moved an island of Japan, a media report said Saturday.  Reports from an Italian institute estimated that Japan earthquake shifted Earth on its axis by as much as 4 inches, CNN said.  Kenneth Hudnut, a geophysicist at the US Geological Survey, told CNN: “At this point, we know that one GPS station moved (8 feet), and we have seen a map from GSI (Geospatial Information Authority) in Japan showing the pattern of shift over a large area is consistent with about that much shift of the land mass.”  The quake occurred as the Earth’s crust ruptured along an area about 400 km long by 160 km wide, as tectonic plates slipped more than 18 metres.  
In fact the earthquake was so powerful that it caused some pretty major geological changes.  Scientists from the USA Geological Service (USGS) inform Japan’s coast is said to have permanently shifted 2.4 meters.  Earth’s axis has reportedly shifted 10 inches as a result of the quake.  “25 centimeters sounds like quite a lot when you hold a ruler in front of you. But if you think of it in terms of the earth as a whole, it’s absolutely tiny.  It’s going to make minute changes to the length of a day.  It could make very, very tiny changes to the tilt of the earth, which affects the seasons, but these effects are so small, it'd take very precise satellite navigation to pick it up,” experts said.




Japan quake shifted Earth 4 inches on its axis.  The earthquake measuring 8.9 on the Richter scale rocked Japan Friday and spawned a tsunami with waves which reached 32 feet that slammed into the northeastern coast, leaving about 1,000 people dead.  The quake was 900 times stronger than the one that hit San Francisco in 1989.  The spiritually advanced person is merciful and compassionate to others who are suffering in the cruel clutches of material nature. One should come to Krishna consciousness to release oneself and also to release others.


WHAT DO THE VEDIC TEACHINGS TELL US? 

A Krishna conscious person should free himself from the clutches of māyā, and he should also be compassionate to all others suffering in those clutches.  The activities of the Krishna consciousness movement are meant not only for oneself but for others also.  This is the perfection of Krishna consciousness.  One who is interested in his own salvation is not as advanced in Krishna consciousness as one who feels compassion for others and who therefore propagates the Krishna consciousness movement.  Such an advanced devotee will never fall down, for Krishna will give him special protection.  That is the sum and substance of the Krishna consciousness movement.  Everyone is like a play toy in the hands of the illusory energy and is acting as she moves him.
