AVOID “HANGOVER” - NO ALCOHOL

THE ONLY ONE WAY TO AVOID
    A HANGOVER - “DON’T DRINK
CHICAGO (UPI) - New Year’s, Halloween and St. Patrick’s Day have one thing in common: People who normally don’t consume much alcohol “get plastered”. My brother used to refer to those holidays as amateur nights. So with the New Year just around the corner, what better time to examine various cures for the dreaded hangover. Sufferers complain of headache, nausea, sensitivity to light and noise, lethargy, dysphoria, diarrhea and thirst. As the effects of imprudent consumption fade, anxiety and depression may set in. The causes? Possibly hypoglycemia, dehydration, acetaldehyde intoxication, glutamine rebound and vitamin B12 deficiency. At any rate, the morning after is highly unpleasant. Among the recommendations offered as a solution on some television medical dramas to speed recovery are intravenous drips of B vitamins, as well as popping vitamin C and N-acetylcysteine.

Other advice has included drinking a massive amount of water and a breakfast including lots of sugar and fat - just try keeping it down. About.com suggests pickles and canned fish. Lifescript.com suggests drinks like Gatorade or Pedialyte to replace depleted electrolytes and lots of fruit. If all else fails, go back to bed.
However, the best advice is found in the British Medical Journal which suggests: “No compelling evidence exists to suggest that any conventional or complementary intervention is effective for preventing or treating alcohol hangover. The most effective way to avoid the symptoms of alcohol induced hangover is to avoid drinking.”

When hangover comes to wine, a bad harvest can produce painful results, with young wines more likely to produce hangovers than those aged in oak barrels, and reds have more negative effects than whites. Much of the effect can be blamed on the alcohol itself - ethanol has a dehydrating effect - and once the body's enzymes get to work on it, it's broken down into other substances much more toxic than the alcohol itself. Combining different forms of alcohol will make a hangover that much worse. And if you're craving coffee, forget it. Coffee is a diuretic that can make the dehydration worse. The only way to be sure you won't get hung over is to avoid consuming alcohol. Unfortunately, for social reasons, from a very young age people begin to consume alcohol.

WHAT DO THE VEDIC TEACHINGS TELL US?
It’s rather common now in America - a sign proclaiming “Drug-free School.” But teachers, parents, and students know the idea is a joke. Intoxicants - tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, cocaine - rage through the minds and bodies of young people practically everywhere. Studies, treatments, and educational programs have done little. Rather, children are taking intoxicants at younger ages, and use is increasing. Modern society knows that intoxication brings crime, cruelty, illness, laziness, accidents, family breakups, and early death. But what can we do to stop it? Influenced by the mode of passion, kids use intoxicants for social acceptance. In fact, mild forms of intoxication are so much a part of the world today, regardless of the country or culture. ... We can keep or save our children from intoxicants first by giving them thorough knowledge of the purpose and plan of creation. From a young age, a child should know that he or she is a pure soul, capable of achieving unlimited spiritual happiness in love of Krishna, both in this life and beyond.
